Fred W. Des Autels

Founder of the Redford Historical Commission, author of Redford’s only history book, noted historian and artifact collector. Some of Fred’s personal effects (courtesy of his family) are on display currently at the museum in honor of Fred’s hard work in making our 50th Anniversary “Heritage Day” exist in the first place! 

Meetings and Open Hours

Regular meetings are held at 6pm on the second Thursday of every other month (January, March, May, July, September, November). Special meetings will be announced on this page. All Commission meetings are open to the public.

The Historical Commission is open the first and third Saturdays of each month from 12-3 and by appointment. Contact us to make an appointment.

NOVEMBER 27, 2019

RTHC displayed their amazing milestone plaque at the Redford Township Board of Trustee’s meeting and got a lot of positive feedback from the community! 

OCTOBER 30, 2019

The Historical Commission participated in Redford Township’s “Angels’ Night” by passing out candy to kids, historical maps, and dressing in period-attire. Despite all the rain, they still managed to have a great time and meet a lot of residents from the community. 

OCTOBER 19, 2019

The Historical Commission received their 50th Milestone plaque, courtesy of the Michigan Historical Society for 50 years of active participation in the community by preserving and dedicating service to history and Redford’s heritage. 

OCTOBER 13, 2019

Annual “Movie in the Cemetery” event at the Redford Cemetery. Celebrating its 4th year, this Halloween themed event is more popular than ever! It sold out so quickly, in fact, that the Historical Commission had to add a second show after the first one. This year’s feature film is the ever-popular The Addams Family. Originally scheduled for October the 11th, it had to be rescheduled due to high wind speeds. 

SEPTEMBER 8, 2019

Historical Commission board members spent several Sundays this summer and fall at Redford’s Market at the Marquee. They sold books, t-shirts, maps, and talked to residents about the organization. Copies of the 1915 map of Redford were also passed out for *free*.

The Redford Township Historical Commission will be proudly participating in the annual Memorial Day Parade. We have even donated a wreath in memory of the recently departed Joe Jeffries

MAY 18, 2019

Redford Cemetery clean up (sponsored by Friends of the Rouge)! Join us from 10:30-12 a.m. to clean up one of our Historic Landmarks! The museum will also be open from 12- 3 p.m. Hope to see you there! 

MAY 4, 2019 – Heritage Day!!! 

Help us celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Historical Commission by honoring our founder and Redford’s first historian, Fred DesAutels, as well as past board members who have contributed to the preservation of Redford’s history. Enjoy refreshments while you view an exhibit on the DesAutels family. Talk with Board members past and present about Redford’s history. This is also a great opportunity to bring in the items you’ve been wanting to donate!

APRIL 20, 2019

RTHC took a field trip to the Redford Theater to watch “Singing in the Rain.” They also were able to present the Theater with a donation in memory of former board member, Chuck Rever, who passed away last October.

APRIL 2, 2019

To prepare for our upcoming exhibit & 50th anniversary celebration, the historical commission has put together an amazing display (highlighting Fred Des Autels & the history of Redford). Check it out at the Redford Library! 

FEBRUARY 1, 2019

The Stuckey School exhibit featured photographs, apparel and commemorative mugs, buttons and bookmarks covering the elementary school’s history from 1949-2011. Of special interest are the contents of the 1979 and 2009 time capsules.

Join us for a fundraiser for the Redford Interfaith Relief – An Evening with Mark Twain! Commission members will be in attendance and we’ve created a display to give you an idea of what Redford was like when Mark Twain was in Michigan. Show starts at 7:30, doors open at 7. South Redford School District Administration Building, 25141 Schoolcraft Road.

DECEMBER 12, 2015

The first exhibit in a series dedicated to Redford Schools – Bulman Elementary! Historical picture Christmas ornaments are available as keepsake souvenirs to people that attend the exhibit.

During the month of November, the Redford Historical Commission set up shop at the VFW Hall for the Redford Community Expo and holiday shopping! 

JULY 20, 2013

The Redford Historical Commission hosted an “Attic Sale” where copies of year books, old reference books, a slide projector, and even some historical artifacts were sold to the public. 

JANUARY 12, 2013

An Exhibit showcasing Redford High School brought in a crowd to enjoy old yearbooks, seats from the auditorium, and even an artistic tile from one of the old drinking fountains!

RHS class of ’63 celebrated their 50th reunion, so they stopped by to check out the collection!

JANUARY 3, 2013

WWII Library Exhibit. This Exhibit featured individuals from Redford High School & Redford Union, as well as artifacts and clothing from that time period.

NOVEMBER 18, 2010

The Redford Township Historical Commission hosted an open-house at “the Little Red Schoolhouse.” 

DECEMBER 9, 1991 

For the Christmas Holiday, the RTHC set up a holiday themed “Antique Toy” display in the museum (which was Room C of the Redford Community Center)
